Nameservers tell the internet where a domain's website and email live. At the top, the Nameservers screen shows what your customers' new domains get. Under Your own nameservers you can set up two named after your own domain, like ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com with your domain in place of example.com.
Before you start
- Your own nameservers are not part of every plan. The Nameservers screen tells you whether yours includes them. If it does not, write to us.
- Your own domain is connected under Your domain. The two names must be inside it.
- You can change your domain's settings where you bought it.
Steps
- Sign in to your brand admin. From the Owner Account you can also open your brand, click Nameservers, then Open in Bright Hosting admin.
- In the menu, open Storefront → Nameservers.
- Under Choose two names, the boxes already suggest ns1 and ns2 in front of your domain. Change them if you like (the two must be different), then press Save names.
- Under Add two records where you bought your domain, the screen shows each name and the IP address it points to. Both point to your server, so both use the same IP address.
- Where you bought your domain, open the part called Glue records, Child nameservers or Host records (each company names it differently). Add both names, each pointing to that IP address.
- Wait for the records to spread, then press Check now under Check them.
- When the badge says Working, choose under Give them to your customers whether your customers' new domains get your own nameservers (Recommended) or the standard ones.
What happens next
Check now checks that both names point to your server. The badge says Waiting for the two records until they do, then Working. Records can take up to a day to spread.
Once you choose your own nameservers, your customers are offered them first when they order a new domain, a domain registered for them without nameservers gets them, and their hosting welcome email shows them. Domains your customers already have keep the nameservers they have. You can go back to the standard ones at any time.
We check your own nameservers again every few hours. If they stop pointing to your server, the badge says Stopped working and your customers' new domains get the standard ones until they work again. Your choice is kept.
Domains that use your own nameservers stop working if those names stop working. Keep the two records where you bought your domain while any domain uses them. If you change the names, choose them again once the new ones work.
Common problems
It says Waiting for the two records
The glue records have not spread yet, or an IP address does not match. Check both records where you bought the domain and press Check now again later.
It says the names must be inside my own domain
Both names must end with your own domain, like ns1.example.com for example.com. If no domain is listed, connect yours first under Your domain.
It says my brand has no hosting server yet
Your brand's hosting server is not set up yet, so there is no address to point the names to. Write to us.
It says Stopped working
One of the two glue records is gone or points somewhere else. Fix it where you bought the domain and press Check now. Your customers get the standard nameservers until then.
