Every brand starts on a free address. You can move your website to a domain you already own, such as brighthosting.com. If your plan does not include this, the screen says so and shows See plans.
Before you start
- You own the domain and can sign in to the company where you bought it.
- See Open your brand admin if you have not signed in there before.
Steps
- Sign in to your brand admin.
- In the menu, open Storefront → Your domain.
- Under Connect a domain you own, type your main domain, for example brighthosting.com (not a part like shop.brighthosting.com), and press Connect.
- A box called Point your domain to us appears. For brighthosting.com it shows an A record, name @, with an address as the value. For www.brighthosting.com it shows a CNAME record, name www, value brighthosting.com.
- At the company where you bought the domain, open its DNS settings and add those records exactly as shown. The copy button next to each value helps.
- Go back to Your domain. Press Check now at any time, or just wait.
What happens next
For a name like brighthosting.com we also add www.brighthosting.com for you. Each address shows Waiting for DNS, then Securing (SSL), then Live. We check every few minutes; the screen says it is usually live within an hour. When your records reach us, we add the SSL certificate (the padlock and https).
A domain you connect does not become your main domain by itself. When it shows Live, press Make main domain and confirm. Your store, customer area and emails then use it, and your old address keeps working.
To stop using an address, press the bin button next to it. To remove your main domain, make another address the main domain first.
If your DNS company can proxy a record (some show an orange cloud), set the record to DNS only until the domain shows Live.
Common problems
It still says Waiting for DNS
DNS changes can take up to a few hours to reach everyone. Check the record type, name and value match the screen. After two weeks we stop checking on our own, so press Check now once it is right.
It says Needs attention
Your domain reaches us, but SSL could not be added yet. We try again on our own a few times, or press Check now.
It says This domain is already connected.
That address is already connected to a website here. Write to us if it is yours.
